    Description

This pretty, vintage soprano Kumalae Hawaiian ukulele, from the early 1900's, sounds as sweet as it looks!  The instrument is constructed of nicely grained, richly colored Koa wood and is delicately detailed with an inlay of curly Koa in a rope design.  It has recently been restrung, and tuned to G-C-E-A.  The original decal on the headstock has the 1915 date, and recognizes the year the Kumalae won the coveted gold award at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.  This item is in good vintage condition, and is fully functional.  The headstock has a flaw to the left of the decal, which does not go through the wood and does not compromise the integrity of the piece.  On the bottom, the veneer has lifted slightly, and is pointed out in the photo.  Please see all photos for design details and condition.  This piece will arrive in its original hard, canvas case, missing straps and top flap, as found.  On the front, someone has penned in ink, Mabel Gilmour, Hunter College, New York, and the initials MG USS MG.  MG is also carved into the back of the ukulele.  The instrument sounded very sweet when played by the owner of the music store where it was restrung, and entertainer Tiny Tim was a big fan!  Whether hanging on the wall or strumming a lively tune, this little piece hits all the right notes!
