Abriea "Abbie" Mitchell Cook, a Black American soprano opera singer, was a featured singer "In Dahomey" by George Walker and Bert Williams. Will Marion Cook, a Black American composer, met Abbie Mitchell during an audition for his musical "Clorindy: The Origin of the Cakewalk".  They married a year later and she was later billed as Abbie Mitchell Cook.  She played the role of Clara in the premier of George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" in 1935 and was the first to record "Summertime".  You can listen to a performance of "Summertime" on YouTube.
