    Peter Henry Emerson (1856-1936) was born in Cuba to American parents who owned a sugar plantation there. Ill health prompted a move to England where he took up photography. He espoused a theory of how the eye sees, focused on only one plane of the visual field at a time, and proposed an approach to photography based on that selective focus.
    He made the case that truthful and realistic photography would eventually replace the contrived, "high art" photography of the time
