ORIGINAL EDWIN LEVICK (1885-1968) NEW YORK YACHT CLUB SAILBOATS RACING GELATIN SILVER PHOTOGRAPHThis is really a wonderful original. I recently picked up a large collection of original sailing photographs, most from the New York Yacht Club, by probably the 2 most important maritime photographers of the 20th Century. The collection consisted mostly of Edwin Levick photographs (some of which I am offering this week and others are also available on the Jonah Fine Art Instagram) but also had a few examples of one of Levick's most important apprentices Morris Rosenfeld. For those not familiar with Levick I have included his biography below.
Original large format New York Yacht Club Yacht racing photograph. Fresh from an incredible archive of Levick original photographs of the New York Yacht Club (Inquire if you want to see some of the others) this is a large photograph measuring 14 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches. Signed and notated New York lower right in pen. Stunning view of the yacht with all sails up. Great contrast to the photo. Original matte and frame. Frame measures 20 1/2 x 16 3/4 inches.

For those not familiar with Levick his biography from a Maritime museum reads: "
Edwin Levick came to America in 1899 from London to work as a translator of Arabic for the Guaranty Trust Company in New York City. He soon turned his attention to photography and was supplying his photographic services to the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, and the New York Herald Tribune as well as Rudder and Motorboat Magazine. He began to write for newspapers and photograph for magazines of the day; he eventually decided to specialize in maritime photography. Within a few years, Levick's successful business had expanded having to employing seven assistants, including Morris Rosenfeld, who would later gain a reputation as a premier maritime photographer in his own right. In 1929, Levick died at his home in New Rochelle, New York, at the peak of his career at the age of 61. The New Rochelle Standard declared he was the "best known maritime photographer in the nation.... a genuinely artistic soul." He had lived in New Rochelle for the past fifteen years and was a member of the New Rochelle Yacht Club.
