Description
Jonah Kamalae Koa Soprano Ukelele c. 1920’s-30’s.Beautiful instrument. It appears to be virtually unplayed because the string action is quite high with no notches ever cut into the bridge. The neck looks straight. The fret edges are a bit sharp. There have been no repairs as far as I can tell. It has its original friction pegs.
The inside label is hard to see from the photos, but it is intact and complete. It says, “Ukelele O Hawaii - made by Jonah Kumalae - Honolulu - Especially for The Music Shop, 221 South 5th Street, Springfield, Illinois, Edwin Bird, Geo Cheatle.” Around the circumference of the label circle, there is reference to the award won at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915, hence the Gold Medal label on the headstock.
This is a gorgeous example of a Kamalae uke. It would make a wonderful addition to virtually any display or collection. For what it’s worth, it has brand new strings.
