Description
Circa 1928 Harmony Johnny Marvin Professional Tenor “Airplane” Ukulele for restoration or parts. With original chipboard case! Please read full description and check photos.Made in Chicago USA by the Harmony Company.
Scale length is 15 inches, so it is really a “concert” size uke by today’s standards, despite the 1920s “tenor” classification.
Does not currently hold tune due to old worn friction pegs, which should be replaced by buyer as part of a restoration project.
Body back has at least one crack in wood a little less than 8” long that was covered (as a sort of repair attempt?) by an early-mid-century Hotel Monteleone New Orleans sticker (“strictly first class”!). Also has an antique Hotel Peabody - Memphis Tenn. sticker and a Hotel Walc(ott?) sticker. Apparently this uke’s original player traveled a bit and stayed in first class hotels.
There are some visible ancient repairs on body sides around the neck heel (lots of glue or something like bondo there, possibly replacing some delaminated wood), and that all seems pretty solid. Also a (repaired?) crack along the lower neck heel. See last photo.
Original neck, fingerboard, frets, and headstock face all look to be in pretty good condition for a well used 90+ year old instrument.
Note I have not attempted to describe every possible flaw. But I noted the main ones I’ve seen.
It had its old strings but no bridge pins when I acquired it. I whittled some makeshift pins out of dowels, and they hold the strings in the body well.
Body and sound hole binding are all still there and intact, as are fretboard dot position markers.
Strings are a bit off center. See all photos to get a better idea of condition.
Finish had lots of patina and checking and it still shines a bit in most places. Plenty of play wear on top in the strumming area between the sound hole and fretboard end.
Please send me any questions you may have. I’ve seen individual parts from ukes like this one sell on eBay for around the starting bid price of this piece. Again, it would be a good candidate for restoration or a good source of parts, and/or a fun addition to a vintage/antique showpiece collection.
Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
