Offering a circa 1893-95 Antique Photogravure Of a French Architectural Landmark. 1) "Eglise De La Madeleine De Vezelay". Size: approximately 7.5x5" plus ample margins on a 9.25x13.75" sheet. Has tissue guard still in place; with general light foxing especially to outer margins; corners are rough but image is excellent and untouched; embossed library stamp from Peabody Institute in margin; one rough edge showing where it was removed from a book.  This is a vintage photogravure and not a modern reproduction.
A photogravure is the most sophisticated of the photomechanical printing processes. The image isn't made in a darkroom. Rather, the photographer's negative is transferred onto a copper plate, which is used to print or engrave the image with ink. Photogravures have a very sensual, almost velvety quality, and were far superior to alternative photomechanical processes of the time.
Vintage Photogravures are very collectible and a way to enjoy vintage photography.
