Anitique Paul F Summers "Famous Waikiki" Ukulele - Made in Hawaii**These pics are temporary. Better pics coming later today**
This is a beautiful piece of history and music, made at the peak of the Ukulele frenzy during the 1920s most likely by famous Hawaiian ukulele luthier Sam Chang.
It is beautiful. It is not perfect. It has cosmetic marks and blemishes and signs of age. But it is sound and solid, plays like you want an Ukulele to play.
It was serviced recently by a luthier friend. He went over everything. He made minor repairs to the very common "hairline" "along the grain" cracks that are found
in many old antique Koa instruments. I had a 1927 Martin Soprano Ukulele that had several of these cracks. None of them go through. The are merely on the surface
and more cosmetic than anything. It is old. But it plays like you want an Ukulele to play.
I noticed today, that there is another Waikiki listed here in San Diego. It is surprisingly similar. And, I am glad it is listed because you can compare.
Look at the grain difference between to two. The grain on our Ukulele as far more rich and wavy. Although it is smooth with similar shadows.
These two instruments look like they could have come off the same bench, like they were made the same day. It may even be possible that they were purchased
at the same time, came from the same batch. I do not know the seller with the other Summers Ukulele. But, I do think it is possible, due to our close proximity,
that these two Ukuleles are related.
Perfect opportunity for a true collector to get BOTH of them!
